Major Flower Pigments Originate Different Colour Signals to Pollinators

چکیده
Flower colour is mainly due to the presence and type of pigments. Pollinator preferences impose selection on flower that ultimately acts Knowing how pollinators perceive flowers with different pigments becomes crucial for a comprehensive understanding plant-pollinator communication evolution. Based space models, we studied whether main groups pollinators, specifically hymenopterans, dipterans, lepidopterans birds, differentially colours generated by major pigment groups. We obtain reflectance data conspicuousness containing one more frequent in flowers: chlorophylls, carotenoids flavonoids. Flavonoids were subsequently classified UV-absorbing flavonoids, aurones-chalcones anthocyanins cyanidin, pelargonidin, delphinidin, malvidin derivatives. found loci carotenoids, aurones-chalcones, occupied regions models these pollinators. The four produced unique cluster loci. Interestingly, differences among almost similar bee, fly, butterfly, bird visual models. Aurones-chalcones showed highest chromatic contrast values, displayed intermediate flavonoids presented lowest values. In model bees, (i.e., white flowers) achromatic contrasts. Ours findings suggest spite omnipresence floral angiosperms, generates higher functional

The role of pollinators in maintaining variation in flower colour in the Rocky Mountain columbine, Aquilegia coerulea.
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Flower colour varies within and among populations of the Rocky Mountain columbine, Aquilegia coerulea, in conjunction with the abundance of its two major pollinators, hawkmoths and bumble-bees. This study seeks to understand whether the choice of flower colour by these major pollinators can help explain the variation in flower colour observed in A. coerulea populations. ME...
متن کاملHow to colour a flower: on the optical principles of flower coloration.
The coloration of flowers is due to the wavelength-selective absorption by pigments of light backscattered by structures inside the petals. We investigated the optical properties of flowers using (micro)spectrophotometry and anatomical methods. To assess the contribution of different structures to the overall visual signal of flowers, we used an optical model, where a petal is considered as a s...
متن کاملFlower colour adaptation in a mimetic orchid.
Although the tremendous variability in floral colour among angiosperms is often attributed to divergent selection by pollinators, it is usually difficult to preclude the possibility that floral colour shifts were driven by non-pollinator processes. Here, we examine the adaptive significance of flower colour in Disa ferruginea, a non-rewarding orchid that is thought to attract its butterfly poll...
متن کاملBlue metal complex pigments involved in blue flower color
The blue pigment of cornflower, protocyanin, has been investigated for a long time, but its precise structure was not entirely explained until recently. The molecular structure of the pigment was recently shown to be a metal complex of six molecules each of anthocyanin and flavone glycoside, with one ferric iron, one magnesium and two calcium ions by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The studies...
متن کاملEvaluating the spectral discrimination capabilities of different pollinators and their effect on the evolution of flower colors
Important plant pollinators like bees and birds have very different color visual systems. Previous work has attempted to relate flower syndromes to the respective visual capabilities of the most important pollinators, but has often been limited by the lack of robust means to make between-species comparisons of how flower color signals are processed. In a recent study we solved this dilemma by c...
